I have been itching to use Safeway Grocery Delivery for a while now and I finally found the deal that incentivized taking the plunge. My AA Shopping was offering a bonus 650 miles (more info about earning airline miles for shopping here). Order groceries from my couch and earn 650 miles? Count me in! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the world’s greatest experience.
Here is my Safeway grocery delivery story:
I picked a 1 hour delivery window, used a code for free first delivery (“EASY7”), placed my order and enjoyed my glass of Pinot. So, the day comes. I race home to await my grocery delivery. I anticipate a very lush experience. I mean, who am I, getting my groceries delivered? That hour comes and it goes. First, I did what anyone would do: I took to Facebook to complain to my friends. I try calling Customer Service….twice—no answer. I try again the next day—no answer. Then, they send me a survey asking how my delivery went and my credit card is charged. At this point, I have lost my cool. SO, again I take to Facebook (please forgive my lack of conventions, I can’t think when I am hungry).
So, eventually they “reschedule” my delivery. The delivery man shows up and he is very nice. I think he would have literally put my groceries away for me if I asked him to hahah. They credited me $30 and apologized for the inconvenience.
MEANWHILE- The lovely people of Sunfare heard my cries:
Sunfare is a different kind of grocery delivery….It is all pre-cooked, pre-portioned, and pre-tty tasty. They sent me a delicious “Signature” order. Now this was a lush experience. They deliver in the middle of the night so your cooler awaits you by 6am. You guys….their food is SO GOOD.
From Sunfare about the Signature meal plan:
- Proteins: all natural, no hormones, antibiotics, nitrates or GMOs
- Fish: wild caught and/or sustainably raised
- Produce: organic when available, market fresh (comes in daily)
- Other: heart healthy monounsaturated fats, whole wheat whole grain products
The smorgasbord they sent my included breakfast (I enjoyed oatmeal for the first time of my life), snack 1 (spectacular pinwheel wrap), lunch (BBQ chicken salad), snack 2 (fresh pineapple), dinner (salmon, sweet potatoes, and a side salad) and snack 3 (cheese plate). I am not sure if I ate everything in the recommended order, but I am sure that everything was delish.
They have quite a few different options. They can send you food daily or you can choose your days. After my little trial, I am seriously considering the Family Dinner Plan for our busy nights. I think I could add another portion and use it for a lunch and justify the cost for the added convenience. Let’s face it, their food tastes better than ANYTHING I can make. I wish I would have taken more photos, but I was too busy scarfing this stuff down.
BACK TO SAFEWAY:
Since my little Safeway episode, they have sent me over 5 different free delivery codes. I plan to do a post on how you can actually save more money with grocery delivery (even if you have to pay for shipping)– I was initially quoted $101.81 but was ultimately charged $79.90. That’s almost $22 in “coupon” savings and a hell of a lot better than I normally do at the store. Plus, I didn’t engage in any impulse buying (i.e. adding to my trail mix collection). Not only can you save money, you can save yourself on the hair-dye needed to cover the grays that the grocery-store-during-peak-hours can cause.
- I did not have to deal with anyone abruptly stopping in a doorway or aisle with zero warning.
- I did not have to get cold in the freezer section.
- I did not have to deal with any tunnel-visioned fool heading for their canned-veggie-of-choice and negligently bumping their cart into me.
- I didn’t have to wait for the woman checking out in front of to finally place the baton-of-peace indicating that I can indeed put my groceries on the conveyor belt.
What is your grocery store pet peeve?
I am probably going to do give it another whirl, but will lower my expectations. I will leave you all with this…
